Analytical specifications

Weighing range

Large weighing range spanning from micro (< 1 mg) to macro (around 1 g of soil) applications and up to 15 mg of organic matter.

Element concentration range

Large dynamic concentration range:

  • C: Up to 14 mg absolute or 0 - 100 % (0 - 50 mg in CN mode*)

  • H: Up to 2 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %

  • N: Up to 10 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %

  • S: Up to 3 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %

  • O*: Up to 6 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %

  • Cl*: Up to 1.2 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %

Precision

< 0.1 % absolute (homogeneous substance), depending on sample type, analysis mode, and configuration

Analysis time

≥ 7 min for simultaneous CHNS determination, self-optimizing depending on element content and sample weight. Depending on sample type, analysis mode, and configuration.

Technical specifications

High-temperature combustion unit:

Complete sample digestion at up to 1,200 °C (or 1,800 °C at the point of combustion when tin foil is used) with a ten-year furnace warranty. A jet injection of oxygen directly to the sample leads to the highest oxygen concentrations at the point of combustion, as well as low gas consumption. 100 % recovery is guaranteed even for samples, that are traditionally hard to combust.

Detector

  • Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD)
  • Infrared (IR) Detector* for sulfur and oxygen
  • Electrochemical Detector* for chlorine

Maximum furnace temperature

1,200 ° C (whereby 1,800 °C is briefly reached at the combustion point when using tin foil)

Required gases

Helium or argon and oxygen

Purge and trap chromatography:

Separation of gaseous components via our TPD column. This column releases individual gases at different temperatures. The release of a gas is only initiated when the prior gas peak has reached baseline. This results in perfect peak separation without overlap, and automatic optimization of the analysis time.

Sample introduction

  • Integrated 60*, 80*, 120, or 240* positions autosampler (for solids and liquids in capsules), reloadable during analysis
  • Integrated 2 ml vial, 50 positions liquid autosampler with rinse and waste vial*, reloadable during analysis

Instrument control

Windows® based UNICUBE® operating software with LIMS integration and auto sleep and wake-up function for automated and unattended overnight operation. 21 CFR Part 11 functionality available.*

Dimensions

48 x 55 x 57 cm (W x D x H)

* optionally available

Accessories

Electronic balance

Balance and elemental analyzer form a system. We offer analytical balances from the leading manufacturers with our instruments. Please ask us for further information.

Capsule sealing press

Tool for the exact dosing and gas-tight sealing of tin or silver capsules, for liquid and sensitive samples.

Sample former and pressing tools

For simplified sample preparation, we offer a manual tool for compressing samples in tin foil or cups, and a mechanical press for the preparation of pellets with paper wrapping.

Audit-ready: Instrument qualification &
21 CFR Part 11 software option

  • Quick and reliable IQ/OQ/vendor PQ, executed by trained service engineers using only certified measuring devices.
  • Easy-to-grasp qualification documents delivered in a binder, to which all appendices are added.
  • All necessary reference materials are supplied.
  • User-friendly 21 CFR Part 11 software option for guaranteed data integrity.

Highly reliable analytical results: Even for the most challenging samples

  • Optimal combustion thanks to a lance, that delivers oxygen directly to the point of combustion.
  • Intelligent peak separation, which adjusts dynamically to each individual sample.
  • Interference-free sulfur analysis as well as trace sulfur analysis thanks to an optional infrared detector, whose signal can be read out together with CHNS via thermal conductivity detector.
  • Extremely low nitrogen blanks as ambient air is effectively flushed away with our patented ball valve technology before start of the analysis.

Wide range of use: Big dynamic range & great sample variety

  • Besides the determination of C, H, N and S (simultaneously if desired), the UNICUBE® has optional oxygen and chlorine analysis capabilities.
  • Covers an unusually big dynamic range – especially on the higher end thanks to the big capacity of the column for gas separation.
  • Even big samples such as 1 g of soil or an entire 45 mm filter can be analyzed without issues.
  • No matter if solid, liquid, viscous, or gaseous – the UNICUBE® offers a suitable and convenient method of introduction for your sample.
  • ≤ 14 mg C (≤ 50 mg C im CN-Modus) bzw. (≤ 50 mg C in CN mode)
  • ≤ 2 mg H
  • ≤ 10 mg N
  • ≤ 3 mg S
  • ≤ 6 mg O
  • ≤ 1,2 mg Cl bzw. 1.2 mg Cl

Protected against gas supply shortages: Low gas consumption & easy carrier gas switch

  • Low gas consumption as gas flow is set to 0 automatically, when no analysis run is taking place.
  • A 50 l helium bottle with 180 bar lasts for 2,900 CHNS-measurements.
  • Easy change between helium and argon with the flip of a switch.
  • No hardware adjustments necessary when switching the carrier gas; only a carrier gas specific calibration needs to be present.

Pleasant & easy to work with: Low-maintenance instrument design

  • Little maintenance thanks to a long-lasting calibration, an unusually big ash collector as well as separate combustion and reduction tubes.
  • Fast maintenance due to clearly arranged, easily accessible system components and tool-free clamp connections.
  • Unusually quiet thanks to an improved ventilation system.
  • Samples can be added to the autosampler (60*, 80*, 120 or 240* positions) at any time – even in the middle of an analysis run.

*optional configuration

Software that makes your life easy: Unattended, user-friendly operation

  • One glance at the software`s “traffic light”-bar tells you if you are ready for analysis.
  • Gas flows, pressures and other critical information is always displayed.
  • A counter keeps track of how many more samples can be run before the next maintenance task is due.
  • Unattended overnight operation possible thanks to auto sleep and event-monitoring functions.
  • The Windows® based operating software features LIMS integration, automated backups and 21 CFR Part 11 compliant functionality.
